EDITOR’S NOTE
Please note new officers.
In some reference journal or book there is an address for FRECOGS listing Frederick, MD 21770 instead of Monrovia, MD 21770.  Does anyone know what this is in so I can get it corrected?  Most of the mail seems to be forwarded to the Monrovia post office, but of course, I don’t know what slips by them and is returned to senders.
The Seminar that was supposed to be held on October 17 never got off the ground.  Carol Perry could not find a place that would take us on the day we wanted.
Carol and George Perry, who have served this society in all capacities since it first started, have moved to Wyoming, and George plans to run a campground.  Carol says that wherever they on she will have a library.  They will be missed.  Their new address, Box 91, Lusk, WY Er:i225

J Carlyle Parker, university archivist at CA State University, Stanislaus has discovered an error in the 1920 US federal census microfilm catalogs published by the National Archives and the Family History Library.  Under California, the catalogs describe the roll (Archives T625, roll 126 and FHL microfilm 1820126) as containing Shasta Co (EDs 96-100; 101-104, and 106-113) and Sacramento Co (ED 126-135; 69-77; 82-85 and 136-138) when it really contains Sacramento Co (ED 86-125). (As above)

This institution invites public attention particularly as a School for the Languages.  Thorough and efficient “Grammar Schools” are confessedly few in the U States.  With the hope of ultimately acquiring for the seminary over which he is placed a reputation of this kind, the principal has attempted this as the sole and favourite object of future enterprise.  Pupils from abroad are confied entirely to his care, and boarded in his family.

They are there treated as social and reasonable beings, the system of discipline aiming carefully to soothe and correct the asperities of passion and inspire generous and delicate sentiments.  The mode of instruction discards finesse, and all attempts at a smoother or readier way to scholarship.  It is natural and simple, and designed to strengthen all the mental faculties by wholesome and vigorous exercise imbue the mind with a true classical taste and a thorough knowledge of its principles.  The sum of $140 covers all expenses whatever, (exclusive of books and clothes) for the academic year of 48 weeks.  For a detailed view of the school address the principal ap4 law4weotfif

studied medicine and followed the practice of it, until his death in 1841.  He intermarried with Margaret, the youngest daughter of Edward WILLIAMS, in 1826.  She died in 1839. (found and submitted by Susanne FLOWERS in-History of Arkansas, Nevada Co pg 584-585)

An immigrant from Wetziar, Hesse, Kingdom of Prussia, one Joh.  Jacob Fredrich MACRANDER, MD married Catharine Ann KOENIG of Kassel, Hesse in the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Frederick, Frederick Co, MD in Jun 1838.  Their dau Mary Catharine MACRANDER was christened in the same church in 1839.  A son, George Henry MACRANDER was christened there in 1842.  On July 10, 1840, the brother of Joh.  Jacob Friedrich MACRANDER, Johannes, arrived at Baltimore, MD.  He followed his trade of tanner in Frederick for the first year of his residence in the US.  The doctor’s family is believed to have then moved to Harrisburg, Dauphine Co, PA afterward.  In the 1850 Federal census for Roanoke Co, VA in the Cave Spring District near Salem, Dr Jacob’s family is found in residence and a John whose occupation was glovemaker, lived in the same house.  His age was about the same age as has been given for the brother John, who arrived at Baltimore in 1840 at the age of 20.  Dr Jacob MACRANDER d in Roanoke Co, VA ca 1859.  His 3 teen age sons eventually became members of the Confederate forces in General Lee’s Army.  One of them may have revisited the Frederick vicinity as a member of the VA 5th Cavalry on a tour with forces which approached Washington, DC for a time.  John MACRANDER, the brother of Dr Jacob MACRANDER moved an to Woodford Co, IL where he tanned skins and began to learn farming.  He wed Sarah Frances ARTHUR, born in Bedford Co, VA while living in IL near Metamora.  The ARTHUR families and the MACRANDER couple brought their children to Buchanan Co, MO near Saint Joseph.  The ARTHUR family settled there.  The following year John MACRANDER and wife settled land in Tarkio Township, (later renamed Lincoln Township), Atchison Co, MO.  After the civil war, a son of the late Dr Jacob MACRANDER, John Albert MACRANDER moved his young family from Boone Co, KY to near Pattonsburg, Daviess Co, MO.  In time, John Macrander of Atchison Co was in contact with his nephew of Davies Co and the latter attended his uncle’s funeral services in 1910.  The MACRANDER brothers were typical of immigrants to the US that often moved on to the West as lands opened up which had less population pressures and seemed to offer new economic opportunities for the less well established.  Other branches of the European MACRANDER family have are in Holland/Netherlands, Canada, and Brazil, but all originated from Bad Wildungen in Waldeck and Wetzlar in Hesse. According to the Marion Co, MO History of 1884, Jacob and Catherine (CALVERT) MATHEWS, originally of Frederick Co, MD moved from Bourbon Co, KY to Marion Co, MO about 1815.  Catherine, born 25 Mar 1789 in Culpepper Co, VA, is listed in the CALVERT genealogy book #1 49, as the dau of George CALVERT.  Her ch from a 2nd marriage were: Eivira MATHEWS, b 1812, Rufus b 1813, Hiram b 1814 and George W b ca 1822.  The Marion County History goes on to list 2 of the early settlers as Jacob MATHEWS and Henry MATHEWS.  This could not be Jacob’s son Henry, as he is too young.  This query concerns another Henry MATHEWS who married Catherine ? Ch were: Amanda (my gggrandmother) b in KY in 1833, Eivira June, and John E MATHEWS.  Notice similarity in wife’s and one child’s name.  Was Henry’s wife also a CALVERT?  Was Henry a brother of Jacob?  Were both Jacob and Henry MATHEWS born in Frederick Co, MD?  Who were their parents?  Jack L Revare, 441 0 W 1 1 2th Terr, Shawnee Mission, KS 6621 1.

I have been researching the OSLER/OURSLER line for quite some time now and I still have one connection to make.  According to a story that I have Ormand OURSLER/ORSLER/OSLER lb 1749) had Peola OSLER in Baltimore in 1795.  Peola went to Thurmont.  He m Sophia WELLER dau of Jacob WELLER who founded the church in Thurmont in 1832.  Sophia d in the 1820’s and she is buried at the Apples Ch in Thurmont.  Peola was in the War of 1812 and moved to Clyde, KS where he died in 1872.  Anyway, back to Ormand.  We don’t know who he married.  He had Peola, George, Elizabeth, Richard and quite a few unknown ch according to census records.  He is listed in the census twice in 1790: once as Ormand ORSLER and once as OSLER.  Peola is listed as OURSLER for his first sons christening and OSLER for his second son.  It is very clear that People changed his name from OURSLER to OSLER, but I have no proof that he was the son of Ormand.  I have been the thurmont 3 times now, and the MHS in Baltimore as well.  I have no idea where the story comes from or who wrote it, All I know is that it was written in 1941.  Orm,?nd to Peola is my one missing link.  Michael OSLER, 3977 Stacy Lane, Lithonia, GA 30058
