ABSTRACTS

Martha Matilda JOHNSON, 1796-1876, wife of Thomas THRASHER was the daughter of Robert Johnson 1748-1825, and his wife Bethany KNIGHT 1766-1833. Robert and Bethany are buried in the Hawbottom Cem (Frederick Co, MD-TDL). Bethany is supposedly from North Carolina. Robert is the son of Thomas Johnson 1712-1778 and Mary ROGERS 1713-1782.
Thomas and Mary are buried at Hawbottom. Mary is allegedly from Baltimore. Thomas is the son of Henry Johnson and Janet SOMERVILLE 1693-1773.  Henry is thought to have died at sea in the crossing. Janet is buried at Hawbottom.
Robert Johns, Jr. married Malinda Thrasher and wound up in Loudoun Co, VA. He and Malinda are buried there in the old Pres(b)yterian Cemetery.
In the June 1994 issue of this newsletter, we asked why some accounts list the wife of Thomas Thrasher 1774-1876 as Martha JOHNSTON 1796-1876 while other source spell her name Johnson.
That question was answered by Mrs Mary Green MOORE of Petersburg, VA who celebrated her 100th birthday in May 1995. According to ‘Aunt Tommy’ Moore, the Johnston name ‘lost its T’ when a scribe at the courthouse recorded a deed for Thomas Johnston, her grandfather. On the way home Mr Johnston notice the misspelling, but by then he had ridden too far to return to the courthouse, and so the legal record of ‘Johnson’ remained. (MATA Data vol 3 #1 Jan 1996)

Pepper Scotto, PO Box 17, Point of Rocks, MD 21777 (a FRECOGS member-TDL), grew up in the historic old house on the original Hook property in Frederick Co, MD between the towns of Jefferson and Point of Rocks. As part of her research on the history of the property, she is researching the HOOK(E) family genealogy.
As your recall, James Hook married Margaret Thrasher in 1706. Most historians think Margaret was the dau of Benjamin (d 1740 in Prince George’s Co, MD) while others think Margaret was probably Benjamin’s sister. At least two more Hook-Thrasher marriages took place in the next few generations.
A national Hook reunion is planned for Sept 19-22 in Raleigh, NC. The contact person is Mary Ruth Stultz, 5800 Swarthmore Dr, College Park, MD 20740-2633 (MATA Data vol 3 #2 May 1996)

C. ENGLE the present efficient circuit clark of Tyler Co is a native of Green Co, PA, where he was born in 1817, his parents being Ezra and Nancy (Black) Engle. The father was born in Fredricktown, Md, the son of Peter Engle, a native of Saxony, who came to North America in 1749. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, after which great event he settled temporarily at Fredericktown, but soon afterward removed across the Cumberland mountains. Subsequently he returned to Fredericktown where he remained about two years, and then removed to Greene County, Penn, which was the scene of his death. (History of the Upper Ohio Valley. Biographies-Tyler County, West VA as reprinted in W.C.G.S Newsletter Vol 16 #4 May 1996 pg 10)

See page 438, W8 WILLIAM ESTEP. The following death notice was originally published in the Huntingdon (County) Journal (PA), dated 12 Oct 1844:
“DIED, on the 4th inst., after an illness of only a few days, WILLIAM ESTEP, in the 79th year of his age. The deceased was born in Frederick county, Md., and emigreated to this State in 1794, and continued to reside in this county until the time of his death. He raised a large family. His father and two brothers served in the Revolutionary War.”
The above notice appeared in a column titled “Window Into the Past” compiled by Steve Kemp, who resides in Huntingdon, PA. His column offers excerpts from old newspapers every other week in the Valley Log.
