EDITOR’S NOTE
All information sent to FRECOGS is considered for publication. Please send in your surname cards, if you haven’t already; pedigree/ahnentafel charts; family group sheets or written accounts of places your family lived in the greater Frederick County, Maryland area. Longer written family genealogies will probably be serialized, as I’ve done with the Binkley family information this year. Please makes sure you put your name and address on every piece of mail you send. To be included in the newsletter next year is a description of the location of the Post Offices of Frederick County in 1887 with names of farmers receiving their mail from these post offices.
The hours of the Frederick Family History Center now include Friday 7 PM to 9 PM, and Wednesday hours now extend to 4 PM.
The Executive Committee has changed the monthly meeting time to 7:30 pm.
Due to newsletter production time constraints, if you have time related events that you want to have listed in the newsletter, I need to have them 6 weeks before the newsletter goes out. So for the 1 December 1996 issue I would need to have them by 20 October 1996. Thanks for your help.

The Historical Society of Carroll County, which recently bought a computer system and the Family Search Program, has added The New England Historical and Genealogical Register on CD Rom. The quarterly, first published in 1847, has in excess of 56,000 pages. The CD version is available during the library’s regular hours. ABSTRACTS
At our May Meeting Becky Hill spoke about the settlement of Seneca County in a talk called ‘Where did they Come’ from.
She discussed the migration patterns of Seneca County settlers. A large number of settlers from Frederick County, Maryland ended up in Seneca County. Some families came directly here, and others settled first in Fairfield or Ross counties in Ohio. Jacob Holtz, ancestor of our member Paul Buskirk, came to Ohio from Frederick County in 1834. In 1836 he visited friends and family in Frederick County. On his way home to Seneca County, he recorded a way bill listing the towns he traveled through and the distance between the town. On the back of the sheet he listed the names of the people the family stayed with on their journey. They traveled along the route which would basically be Interstate 70 today. The way bill appears on pages 44-45 in the May/June issue of Seneca Searchers. If you have ancestors who came from Frederick County, you can get a good idea of the route they probably traveled by checking this way bill. The migration from Frederick County lasted 50 to 50 years and involved a great number of people. The newspapers reported social events at which everyone who attended was from Frederick County. My grandfather, Jacob Holtz, was born the 17th of June 1786. My grandmother, his wife, Susanna Margaret Feaga Holtz was born Oct 13 1788. Both he and his wife first saw the light of day in Frederick Co, MD.
Jacob Holtz was the owner of a fine farm of 120 acres on the banks of the Monocacy River in the state of Maryland. This he sold for a high figure in the year 1827 and moved his family to a farm at the mountain, owned by his uncle Nicholas Holtz, where he resided for five years. He then decided to try his fortune in the then wild and wooly west, Ohio.
He wanted to go where there was free schools and where slavery did not exist. He landed in Tiffin, Ohio (on) April 28, 1834. He soon afterwards purchased this farm where we all meet today Aug 12, 1914 at Marcus Holtz’s.
He purchased this particular farm for three reasons; its fertile soil, running water and on account of an agreement made between himself and Mr Frederick Cramer (father of Dennis Cramer and Mrs William Holtz) that when he got to Ohio he would try to buy a home where he and Mr Cramer could look in each other’s doors. These two men being fast friends back in Old Maryland. Mr Cramer came to Seneca County, Ohio in 1832.
Jacob Holtz purchased this farm of a Mr Lewis Baltzell Aug 12 1834 just eighty years ago today Aug 12 1914 where our Holtz Reunion was held. This is the “Plymouth Rock” of the Jacob Holtz family in Ohio.
Jacob Holtz’s family consisted of five sons and two daughters. One little girl of eight summers lies in the old cemetery near Walkersville, so well known to the older people as Glade Valley Cemetery. This little girl, Susan died with scarlet fever. His children were all born in the native state. The youngest was a boy of seven years when they came to Ohio. He started for the new country by the only way of traveling at this time, in wagons over the old Cumberland Road. Jacob P Holtz, then a boy of 17 years drove the team that hauled the household goods. The younger ones rode in the only automobile of the day, the old fashioned “Barouche”. Jacob’s brother Nicholas Holtz came to Ohio at the same time as also did the late Enoch Fry (Father of B F and Enoch Fry of Green Springs, Ohio). Mr Fry rode a white pony and was sent on ahead of the wagons to engage lodging for the night
Our Grandmother Holtz’s father was a Revolutionary soldier, first hired by King George, but when he got across the waters he looked upon the colonies as the ‘Promised Land’.
He soon deserted King George’s army and fought shoulder to shoulder with the Patriots and forefathers in their fight for liberty. He was a Hessian by birth and when he deserted King George forces he changed the spelling of his name from Fiege to Feaga to avid detection by King George’s officers.
Jacob Holtz died Dec 29 1859 in this house where Marcus Holtz lives, Aug 12 1914. Grandmother Holtz died in May 1870.

My grandfather Holtz had two brothers. Nicholas Holtz that came along from Maryland. He lived here. He was the father of Edward Holtz. I think they are buried in Wood County near Fostoria. The other brother was John Holtz, grandfather of Flora (Holtz) Dudrow. He always lived in Maryland.
These two brothers married sisters by the name of Gittinger. They were sisters of Robert Gittinger’s father and sisters of Mrs. Susan Bowersox, mother of Mrs Rit Drown.
My grandfather had sisters-one I saw, she married a man by the name of Wolfe. She was called aunt Polly Wolfe. She always lived at Johnsville, Frederick County, Maryland. The other sisters I know nothing about. My great grandfather Holtz’s name was Jacob Holtz, he married Barbara Morningstar. I have been told that the Holtz’s have relatives by the name of Firestone and Morningstar that lived in and around Dayton, Ohio. My grandfather and mother visited them before my mother was married.
My grandmother Holtz’s maiden name was Feaga as it had been told before. Her mother came from Germany when she was a little girl 10 years old and she lived to be almost 102 years old. I have the goblet she used to drink out of when she was that age. Her maiden name was Crindler and she married a Feaga. Her mother died on the boat coming over with seasickness and is buried in the Atlantic

The Nicholas Holtz family is buried in Fountain Cemetery (Wood Co), Fostoria, OH.
Susan Margaret (Feaga) Holtz’s parents were Philip and Christiana (Grindler-Hummel) Feaga. He was a miller near Walkersville, Md and acquired a good deal of property. Christiana was married to a Hummel before her marriage to Philip Feaga. She had one daughter by Mr Hummel

Draper Mss 2S45-49. Draper’s interview, 1845 with Mrs. Priscilla Biggs (born June 4 1778)
“Gen Benjn. Biggs, son of Benjn was born Jan 31 1754, 2nd son, in Frederick Co, Md on the Monocacy[?] “Soon after the French near, the elder Biggs emigrated with his family to the Glades in the mountains, then advanced to Beeson’s Fort, now Union Town–while cropping, had a guard there–finally from ’70 to ’73 (probably the first) emigrated to waters of Short Creek in neighborhood of West Liberty, adjoining the village. Abram Van Metre Sr was also an early settler.” [Here follows some account of his military career.]
2S48. John Biggs, next older than Ben. Biggs was born probably in 1752. killed in Crawford’s defeat. Was about 6 feet 3 inches. Left a widow and one child.
Allen Metcalf, father of Mrs Gen Ben Biggs, was in service in 79-80-81. His brother John went the 20th July, ’75 from Berkley Co VA for Boston.
George Metcalf, their father, moved from Prince Georges Co, Md to Berkley in March 1764.
Allen Metcalf moved from Berkley with his family in Nov ’83 to West Liberty.
2S49. Wm Biggs, brother of Gen Biggs, taken prisoner. Kept 6 months. Sold 3 times and after that purchased himself, paid part in fur. Died about 1827.

Came to the country in ’76 with his parents and settled at the Beech Bottom. There a station was made and forted, called the Beech Bottom Fort, in which about 15 or 20 families forted during 1777. Joseph Ogle the commander.
2S53. John Wetzel’s defeat. A party had been scouting on Wills Creek. Joseph Hedges (“a cousin of my informant of the same name”) was sick, not Linn. A sentry was placed on the bank, but the Indians crept up and fired upon the came. Hedges and Linn were killed a few yards from the camp near together, and Thos Biggs had got some 200 yards off. All three were scalped and stripped, but not mangled. Hedges was a son of Eggt. [Manuscript is difficult to read here, there word may be XXXX.] Silas Hedges. This occurred in December, but informant does not remember the year.

Please excuse me for not writing you sooner but I did some research on this information before I sent it to you. Odd as it may seem I was thinking about you and your visit 8 years ago when my wife came home and said “I have a letter from a John Dern in California.”
To me a friend is more valuable than money so I am just too glad to be of help to you even though it is small in lieu of what you are doing.
First of all you are right when you say Double Pipe Creek is now Detour. I might add that Haugh’s Church is now called Mount Zion but most of us still use Haughs as the title.
The Lewis Cash you mentioned was an unwanted baby placed in a box or basket and left at a farm house doorstep. The people found him and in the box or basket was a sum of money. By this they called the baby Lewis Cash. The last name derived from the cash that was put in the basket beside him. Lewis Cash had two boys, Robert and Edward Oliver Cash. The girls were Alice, Ella, Lula, Ellie and Mamie.
Edward Oliver Cash had a son Truman. They had a business of real estate and insurance in Westminster. Oliver died in 1954. The son Truman kept the business in the name of E C Cash & Son.
I called and talked to him today. He told me his grandfather Lewis Cash owned the Delaplaine farm which Ray Myers and son now own and this was the original home site of Lewis and across the highway was another farm he owned and it was sold to Newton Coshun and Coshun sold it to Hanns Stephen, the present owner.
The reason this was sold was that Lewis Cash was run over by a wagon that was pushed out of the barn by help at threshing time and he was old and didn’t get the brakes drawed in time.
It was this farm (Coshun and then the present owner Stephen) that the land runs down along Big Pipe Creek and Little Pipe Creek to the intersection of both which makes Double Pipe Creek here in Detour. And as you state in your letter the sawmill was at this point but on our side of Double Pipe Creek. I can show you a couple of old logs under water that made up the dam to run the mill along our property.
Now about the German Reformed Church. I cannot find a living person that can verify the German part of it. But Mr Cash did say it was Lutheran and Reformed. It sat in the old part of Haugh’s Cemetery. It was torn down and both went to a newer type building near Ladiesburg, a mile or so south of its location. Then the Lutherans split and built their church known as Haugh’s and the Reformed’s stayed on but later they split apart and some went to Union Bridge Reformed and some went to Woodsboro Ref. There is a large stone out there yet where the old church stood which was the entrance step. My wife’s 2nd cousin is buried where the old church stood. His name is Emory L Warner, a storekeeper here in Detour most of his life.
I talked with Mr Baxter Dougherty, 79 years old, a member of Haugh’s Cemetery Board and he is sure this is the correct church you have in mind and he recalls the site of the sawmill to which you refer.
Mr Cash doesn’t recall anything of his grandfather having owned any property at Haugh’s Church area although it is a farm between the cemetery and property owned by Lewis Cash which he could have owned in earlier times or perhaps he bought and gave to the Reformed Church a piece of grand in its beginning.
Mr Truman Cash gave a large piece of ground to the haugh Cemetery in memory of his father Edward Oliver Cash who died in 1954. I didn’t think to include this bit of information when I was telling you about Cash by the Delaplaine mentioned was married to Alice Cash, one of Lewis Cash’s daughters and she stayed on the home place (Lewis Cash’s farm) until her death some years ago when it was sold to Ray H Myers and son.
So on our property, now deeded to Mrs Lewis Warner, Detour, was in the real old days a mill site to be sure as the sawmill you mentioned in your letter was on the south east part of our property, the flour mill being at the northeast side of the same property and over the other side of creek (east side) was a fulling mill where wool was processed for weaving.

The Cem at Baptist Rd and Taneytown Rd is site of an old Baptist Church. There are some FREAMS, GILLELAN and HAYS in there.
Did I tell you I found an overlooked card on Mrs BARR’s John WILSON and w Sarah Jane? The graves are in Utica Cemetery. I sent the data and pictures of that stone and the ECKMAN stone in Lewistown cem.
Yes, I do the family cem. When new ones turn up from time to time.
The old cem on Jerry MOSER farm has been eliminated. I was there and talked to Moser a couple of years ago.
He has one stone near the house, a child HANEGE (HANKEY) and said that was all that was left of the original cemetery.
