Linton collection at C Burr Artz Library, Maryland Room

Miscellaneous Notes

  • The overall ‘Search’ feature will not find the names in the individual ‘Letter’ PDFs. The PDF of each letter itself is searchable.
  • Remember this is a work in process. Not all the errors have been corrected. And there are over 280,000 cards in the collection which can have mistakes when they were listed.
  • Every effort to list all the cards has shown that there were cards out of place in the drawers. They are showing up in the drawer where they were found. This is another correction for a future time.
  • As I worked on the collection, usually the cards were viewed at about 50% of their size and because of the images created by the keystrokes of the old-style typewriter I may have made mistakes as far as what the letter really is. I, T, L can all look very similar with the typewriter that was used.
  • P, B and F create a similar situation
  • The author would reuse cards and those cards that had cross out marks are also included in the collection; additions added at a later time are usually not included.
  • Major changes to cards made at a later date are usually not included. If they are included, they are under the caption section and not under the first name section.
  • Cards in sequence with the same name are shown with [2], etc. after the first card in the set with the same name.
  • In some cases there are 2 cards for the same person but the information of the first name and caption are different enough that they are not designated this way.
  • Multiple cards for the same person are shown in the sequence 2, 3, etc.
  • When taking pictures of the images I tried to line them up from the camera’s perspective as if they would be parallel to the top and the bottom hopefully making it easier to OCR the images. Some names are misspelled on the top line; if I wasn’t paying attention they would be spelled as listed on the top line instead of with the correct name as listed in the obit.
  • If an Event took Place in Westminster say in 1838 and was listed as MTGY Co. someone came  along and marked through Montgomery and make it Carroll. This list includes the cards with the original caption despite it being crossed out.
  • in a few cases I have checked NIS for spelling. Starting with ‘R’ there are so many reused cards I started including them in the listing. They may be duplicates, or the may replace the original cards that have gone missing.
  • A lot of the cards that don’t have particular family information mentioned family books and files. I do not know where these ‘files’ are.
  • Catherine is frequently Catharine
